Lady Gators Prepare for Another Great Season

Sitting: Paula Bomford, Elizabeth Perdue, Jessie Hammett, Karley Franklin. Standing: Julie Humphries, Carley Adams, Emily Robertson, Allie Kelley, Halston Young, Libby Parker. The Glenwood basketball season is underway, and the Lady Gators are hoping for another successful run after finishing as the 3-A AISA State Runner-Up last year.

Having lost three senior starters from the lineup, the Lady Gators have high expectations for this season.  It will not be easy to replace Bree Nowlin, Mandy Marriott and Ashley Chambliss, who played huge roles in advancing the Lady Gators to the state championship game last season.

Even though the Lady Gators are somewhat young and inexperienced, they are off to a great 7-1 start.  The girls worked extremely hard over the summer and are dedicated to making this a great year.  The girls understand and respect Glenwood’s winning tradition.  Their goals as a team every year include winning a region and state championship.  This year will be no different.

The team is led this year by seniors Jessie Hammett and Ashlee Greene, who have done a great job setting the tone for their teammates.  They have demonstrated senior leadership that every team must have to be successful.  These leadership qualities, exemplified on and off the court, are instrumental in the team’s success.

The Lady Gators have four juniors: Carley Adams, Paula Bomford, Karley Franklin and Halston Young.  Adams, Franklin and Young will be in the starting lineup this year and the team’s success will depend on their contributions.  These three girls could lead the team in assists, steals, rebounds and points per game.

Freshman Emily Robertson is expected to come off the bench this year and contribute her outside shooting ability to the team.

The Lady Gators also have two eighth-graders whose youth and inexperience should not be underestimated.  Elizabeth Perdue and Allie Kelley will be a big part of the starting lineup throughout the year.  Perdue not only handles the ball extremely well but also shoots well and will be a scorer for the Lady Gators.  Kelley, 6’2”, has a lot of potential and should be a force inside on the boards.  These two players will contribute and be a big part of Glenwood’s success this year.

The Glenwood girls basketball program is no stranger to winning.  Head coach Julie Humphries is in her fifth year at Glenwood School. In her first two years as an assistant under coach Tim Mayse, the team won 60 games and two state championships. In one of those seasons, the Lady Gators went undefeated with a 31-0 record.

The girls are familiar with the winning tradition of the Glenwood Lady Gators basketball program and are expected to compete at a high level every night.  This team will be no exception to the rule!
