LSA Cheerleading: A Winning Tradition

Lee-Scott Cheerleading TeamThe Lee-Scott Academy cheerleading program wins – and wins big!  But squad members do more than bring home trophies.  The cheerleaders are active on the field, in the community and on campus.

Veteran cheerleading coach Emily Severin heads the program.   Coach Severin has 38 years of experience coaching for LSA, Opelika City Schools and All-Star competition teams.    Coach Severin is certified by the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators in the area of safety for all aspects of cheerleading.

After preparing several weeks during the summer, the cheerleaders kicked off the 2010-2011 competition season by attending camp at Huntington College in Montgomery. The Alabama Independent Schools Association hosts the event sponsored by Universal Cheerleaders Association.

The squad’s hard work paid off.  The varsity squad, comprised of sophomores, juniors and seniors, was named AISA State Champion in the Medium Varsity Division.   The squad won first place in Cheer, first place in Extreme Routine and third place in Home Pom.

Lee-Scott Cheerleading TeamSeniors Tori Long, Taylor Leonard, Lauren Speakman and Ansley Prather were selected to the 24-member AISA East All-Star cheer squad.   This privilege will allow the young women to cheer at AISA All-Star football and basketball games.  Speakman and Leonard were also selected as UCA All-Stars. Speakman was also honored to receive an application for UCA staff tryouts.

Former LSA varsity squads won the competition in 2005 and 2009, and were runners-up in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

The junior varsity competition squad won the AISA Large Junior Varsity Division.  The team placed first in Home Pom, first in Extreme Routine and third in Cheer.   Freshman cheerleader Kaitlyn McLeod was selected as UCA All-Star.

LSA Junior Varsity squads also won the competition in 2004-2008 and were runner-ups in 2009.

The most prestigious award bestowed upon the LSA cheerleaders at camp was the Leadership Award.  Each cheer team votes for the squad they think exemplifies true leadership and top talent at camp.   The award is based on “inspiring leadership on and off the field.”  This is a huge honor for LSA.

This group of cheerleaders participates in other LSA sports. Many of the girls earn additional state champion titles in volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball or track.   Several cheerleaders participate in All-Star cheerleading programs, competing all over the Southeast.

The cheerleaders are also active in the community and have completed many mission projects.  The “Cheer for Shoes” and “Cheer for Socks” programs collected shoes and socks for children who did not have these basic necessities.  The mission projects were school-wide and encouraged participation from all grade levels.  Cheerleaders promoted and sorted donations and helped deliver the gifts to organizations that would disperse them to the Emmanuel Orphanage in Honduras.
