Coach Carolyn Wright Named Coach Of The Year
by Anthony Mooney

The 2009-2010 girls’ basketball season saw Lady Devils basketball coach Carolyn Wright lead the team to a 21-9 record and the Central region finals. Her main focus became turning her team into a dominating force who was both faster and more physical than their opponents.
Coach Wright told the Auburn-Opelika newspaper, “At first they were complaining about how ‘this is a foul’, and ‘that’s a foul’. And I’m like, ‘You wait until the officials start letting the game go and you want them to call a foul. They’re not gonna call it.’ ”
Last season, the Lady Red Devils took a disappointing blow in the first round of the area tournament when they lost to Opelika by 15 points. This year, the team returned with heightened spirits, a base of skill built on strong practices led by Coach Wright, and a determination to push themselves farther and harder than the previous season. This kind of push, support and demand from Coach Wright has been fostered by a 19-year career at Central High School; one in which she has learned how to mold and shape young women into strong competitors on the court.
This season was the evidence of that coaching. The Red Devils were strong all season and found their footing in both the area tournament and the sub-regional. Especially impressive was their defeat of Sidney Lanier, who had only lost once until the Red Devils beat them. Finally, the team lost to Jeff Davis in the Central region final, bringing an end to an impressive season.
The 21-9 record and being named one of Alabama’s eight final teams earned Coach Wright the honor of the Opelika-Auburn News Girls Coach of the Year.
